Three faces of autonomy: Exploring configurations of high team autonomy in software project teams
Oliver Krancher, professor, ITU
Autonomy is widely seen as a hallmark of successful agile teams. Yet in many projects, the question is not whether teams should be autonomous, but how to establish the right type of autonomy without losing alignment. Using survey data from 76 software development projects, this talk shows that autonomy is not one-size-fits-all, but emerges in different forms with different consequences for how teams work and how projects perform. Understanding these differences helps project managers more effectively balance and blend autonomy and alignment in their own projects.
